Abstract
This study examined the
relationship between inter-professionalshared decision making and
organizational citizenship behaviour of tertiary health institutions in
south-south Nigeria. The study applied survey research design.A total of four
hundred and sixty-four (454) doctors and nurses in five teaching hospitals in
South-South Nigeria, constituted the population of the study. The hypotheses
formulated for the study were tested using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM).
The outcome of the analyses revealed a significant positive association between
the shared-decision making and the measures of organizational citizenship
behaviour (altruism, conscientiousness and courtesy). It was concluded that
inter-professionalshared decision making drives organizational citizenship
behaviour of tertiary health institutions in South-south Nigeria. Therefore, it
was recommended that health institutions shouldprovide education and training
to healthcare professionals on the principles of shared decision-making,
including patient-centered care, empathy, and respect; create a supportive
environment that encourages and reinforces altruistic behaviour; involve
patients and families in the shared decision-making process to ensure that
their values and preferences are incorporated into the decision-making process.
