Economic growth and environmental degradation in India: A review and trend analysis of the Environmental Kuznets Curve hypothesis

Abstract
This paper examines the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis the proposition that environmental degradation rises with economic growth at low levels of income and falls once a threshold income is crossed in the context of India. Drawing on secondary emissions and income data and synthesising recent Indian and cross-country empirical literature (2010–2026), the paper evaluates whether India's growth trajectory is consistent with the inverted U-shaped EKC. The evidence is mixed: several studies confirm an inverted U-shape for India, but estimated turning points vary enormously (from roughly US$1,800 to US$28,000 per-capita GDP) depending on whether environmental policy variables are included, and India's per-capita CO2 emissions were still rising as of 2023–2024. The paper argues that the EKC in India, where it exists at all, is being pulled forward chiefly by deliberate policy intervention renewable energy deployment, the PAT scheme, and electric-vehicle adoption rather than by market forces alone. Policy implications for balancing growth and sustainability are discussed.
