Abstract
This article analyzes production linkages in Mexico's automotive industry amid U.S.-imposed tariffs. These tariffs create operational, financial, and technological pressures that prompt a reevaluation of business collaboration models and supply chain organization.
The section on the domestic automotive industry highlights its role as an economic engine and a strategic exporter, emphasizing Mexico's position as the world's fourth-largest light-vehicle producer. The article then examines production linkages—the network of horizontal and vertical relationships among automakers, suppliers, and regional clusters—that sustain competitiveness amid an adverse international environment.
The text explores the supply chain concept and context, noting that tariffs have reduced exports to the U.S., prompting market diversification toward Canada, Brazil, and Colombia. It also examines the current state of technological and production integration within the automotive ecosystem, where the transition to electromobility and digitalization presents both opportunities and challenges.
An analysis of strengths and vulnerabilities identifies advantages such as installed capacity and export experience, alongside weaknesses related to dependence on the U.S. market and pressure on local suppliers. Finally, the article outlines key challenges, including the need to diversify markets, adapt technology, comply with USMCA rules of origin, and consolidate business cooperation frameworks.
